Virginia and South Dakota to Administer NextGen Bar Exam, Join a Majority of US Jurisdictions Adopting New Attorney Licensure Test
Virginia and South Dakota are the latest jurisdictions to announce that they will adopt the NextGen bar exam. South Dakota will first administer the new exam in July 2027, and Virginia will hold its first administration in July 2028.

NCBE Releases National Mean for November 2024 MPRE
The national mean scaled score for the November 2024 MPRE was 95.6, 2.4 points lower than the November 2023 mean of 98.0. The November 2024 mean reflects the performance of 19,737 examinees, 1,538 fewer than the November 2023 examinee count of 21,275.

The Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands has announced that it will administer the NextGen bar exam beginning in July 2026. The Court will continue to administer local content essays alongside the new exam. Twenty-six jurisdictions in total have now announced plans to adopt the NextGen exam.

NCBE Publishes Results of NextGen Field Test Research
The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) has published a research brief summarizing the results of field testing conducted in January 2024, part of ongoing implementation research for the NextGen bar exam. The new exam will have its first administration in July 2026. Results of the first stage of NextGen implementation research, pilot testing, were published earlier this year.

NCBE Announces National Mean for July 2024 MBE
The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) announced today that the national mean scaled score for the July 2024 Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) was 141.8, an increase of about 1.3 points compared to the July 2023 mean of 140.5 and the highest July MBE mean since 2013, excluding the summer and fall 2020 administrations.
